Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka's most important pilgrim towns. Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Vedda devotees all visit the Kataragama Devalaya and Kiri Vehera, and the town is also the northern gateway to Yala National Park via the Sithulpawwa Road. Places to stay range from simple rest houses and family-run hotels near the town centre, on Depot Road, Sandharaja Mawatha and Detagamuwa, to safari lodges, eco-resorts and tented camps out towards Sithulpawwa and Yala. Many of these arrange jeep safaris with their own drivers. The hotels below are ranked by real guest reviews. - Which hotels in Kataragama has the most reviews?

- How many hotels are listed in Kataragama?
- Review Guru has 15 hotels listed in Kataragama, aggregating 149 customer reviews across them. We only include a business on a "best of" page once it has at least 3 reviews so the ranking is meaningful.
- How are these hotels ranked?
- We use a Bayesian-weighted average score that combines the business's own star rating with the volume of reviews it has received. This prevents a single 5-star review from outranking 30 consistent 4-star reviews. Read more on our methodology page.
- Are the reviews verified?
- Reviews on Review Guru come from two sources: native submissions written directly on our platform, and imported reviews from Google Maps that we rewrite for clarity while preserving the original rating, sentiment, and named entities. Source is tagged on each review for transparency.
- Should I stay near the Kataragama Devalaya or closer to Yala for a safari?
- If the pilgrimage is the main reason for your trip, stay in or near town, around Depot Road, Sandharaja Mawatha or Detagamuwa. You can then reach the Devalaya and Kiri Vehera for the evening pooja without a long drive, though guests note that some places listed as Kataragama are a 20-minute walk or a short tuk-tuk ride from the sacred area. If a Yala safari is your priority, the lodges, eco-resorts and camps along the Kataragama–Sithulpawwa Road are closer to the park, and many arrange early-morning jeeps with their own drivers. Several guests combine both: an evening at the Devalaya, then a dawn safari the next day. Check recent reviews for comments on the distance to the temple and on the safari arrangements. For places to eat in town, see /best/restaurants-in-kataragama.
- How far ahead should I book a hotel for the Kataragama Esala festival?
- Book as early as you can. The Kataragama Esala festival and perahera, usually in July or August, draws very large pilgrim crowds, and rooms in and around town fill quickly, often at higher prices. Many pilgrims reserve weeks or months ahead, and at least one guest reports calls going unanswered, so confirm your booking in writing before you travel. If places in town are full, lodges along the Sithulpawwa Road and hotels in nearby Tissamaharama are common fallbacks. Check recent guest reviews for comments from people who stayed during the perahera season.
