Trincomalee is the main beach base on Sri Lanka's east coast, and its hotels fall into three areas. Trincomalee town, around Dutch Bay and the Orr's Hill lagoon, has budget hotels and guest houses close to the bus stand, Fort Frederick and Koneswaram Temple. Uppuveli, a few kilometres north, is the busiest beach strip, with guest houses, cabanas and mid-range beach hotels a short walk from its restaurants. Nilaveli, further north, has a quieter, longer beach and is the departure point for boat trips to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling. The east coast has its own season: seas are calmest and skies clearest from roughly April to September, when the south and west coasts are in monsoon. - Sri Lanka's two coasts have opposite beach seasons. The south and west coasts, such as Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna and Negombo, are at their best from roughly December to April. If you are travelling between May and September, the east coast is usually the better beach choice, and well-reviewed hotels in Uppuveli and Nilaveli can book out in July and August.
