Anuradhapura is the base for exploring the Sacred City, the UNESCO-listed ruins of Sri Lanka's first capital, including the Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya and the great dagobas of Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri. Its hotels range from guest houses and villas in the town to lakeside hotels on the Nuwara Wewa and Tissa Wewa reservoirs and quieter resorts on the outskirts. Mihintale, where Buddhism is said to have arrived in Sri Lanka, is about 12 km east. It draws huge crowds of pilgrims during the Poson full moon in June. Guest houses and smaller hotels in this area are usually the most affordable. Hotels on the Nuwara Wewa and Tissa Wewa lakes are a short tuk-tuk ride from the ruins. They are quieter, with lake views and sunsets, and suit travellers who want a more relaxed stay. Resorts further out on the edge of town suit those with their own transport, including travellers heading on to Wilpattu. - Do I need to book Anuradhapura hotels early for Poson or Vesak?
- Yes. The Vesak full moon (usually May) and especially the Poson full moon (usually June) bring very large numbers of pilgrims to Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Hotels and guest houses in and around the Sacred City fill up, prices can rise, and roads near the sites get congested or closed to traffic. If you are travelling around these full-moon days, book well ahead and confirm your booking directly with the hotel. You could also stay at a lakeside or outskirts property with easier road access. Outside the festival season, you can usually find rooms at short notice.
