Dambulla is the crossroads of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, where the A9 meets the Kurunegala and Habarana roads, and home to the Dambulla Cave Temple. Its hotels fall into a few clusters: city hotels on the Kurunegala Road and around the bus stand and Economic Centre, resorts beside the Ibbankatuwa and Kandalama reservoirs, and villas and eco lodges set among paddy fields and jungle on the roads toward Sigiriya and Habarana. - Should I stay near the Dambulla Cave Temple or out by Kandalama lake?
- Hotels in town, around the Cave Temple, the Kurunegala Road and the bus stand, are close to restaurants (see our Best Restaurants in Dambulla list), buses and the temple itself, so you can climb to the caves early before the heat. They are usually the most affordable option. Resorts near the Kandalama and Ibbankatuwa reservoirs are a short drive out of town. They are quieter, with lake and jungle views, pools and more wildlife, and suit travellers with a driver or their own transport. If you are arriving by bus and want to walk to the temple and town, stay central. If you want a relaxing resort stay between sightseeing days, choose the lakeside properties.
- Is Dambulla a good base for visiting Sigiriya and Minneriya?
- Yes. Dambulla sits on the main road network of the Cultural Triangle, roughly 20 km from Sigiriya and within easy driving distance of Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, famous for elephant gatherings in the dry season, as well as Polonnaruwa. Many Dambulla hotels arrange tuk-tuks, drivers and jeep safaris for these trips. It also has better bus connections and more shops and restaurants than Sigiriya village.
