Rude hospital staff and poor service

The hospital nurses were quite rude. They didn’t allow anyone a chance to charge their phones. Whenever they noticed someone charging, they would come over and scold them. Overall, the service was very disappointing.

    Terrible experience at this hospital

This place is just awful. The staff is lazy and will ignore you. The doctors come off as arrogant, acting like they are untouchable. If it’s not an emergency, steer clear. If they admit you to a ward, you might end up sleeping on the floor with dogs, bugs, dirt, and everything else you could imagine. You’d be better off at a smaller hospital for non-emergencies.

    Disappointing Service Experience

In 2022, my 11-year-old daughter was in the children's ward, and we encountered some real issues with the service. While some of the cleaning staff were decent, there were a few who were quite problematic. On one occasion, my daughter went to the bathroom to brush her teeth at the sink, and suddenly one of the cleaning ladies started yelling at both of us for that! Additionally, the security staff were not friendly at all; they seemed judgmental, and honestly, the military personnel were more respectful than them. Overall, the staff and services were very disappointing. I really hope things improve in the future.

    Terrible experience with hospital care

I want to share my experience with this awful hospital. As a nurse who isn’t working in Sri Lanka anymore, I’ve seen how patients are treated in other countries, and it’s a stark contrast to what I witnessed here. This place was also my training hospital, and I’ve observed the staff's attitudes towards patients. We’re taught that the patient comes first, but that seems to be completely ignored in this setting. What kind of people work here? My father visited the outpatient department (OPD) for urinary retention today. The doctors evaluated him and, rather than focusing on his primary issue, they admitted him to ward 6A, which is a surgical ward for hemorrhoids. While that’s fine, he actually came in for pain caused by urinary retention. They should have treated that condition first and then, if necessary, referred him to a proctologist or surgeon later. Instead, they placed him in a ward where he was in significant pain. My mother approached a nurse to discuss his pain, but the nurse said she couldn’t move him because all the minor staff had gone to lunch together. These are the types of management issues that need addressing in the hospital. If you can’t manage properly, perhaps it’s time to let someone else take over. We can’t expect much from these so-called nurses or new doctors—they seem to have theoretical knowledge but lack practical experience. They discharged my father without properly informing him. What is this? Patients deserve to be informed about their health. Doctors should explain everything to patients, rather than just telling them to drink more water. Even though my father was hesitant to drink water due to his urinary retention, they didn’t address his concern. He was worried that drinking water might worsen his condition and prevent him from urinating again. The issues began right at the OPD. They should have listened to the patient and treated him for the actual reason he sought help, instead of relying solely on theory. Imagine if this were your own father—could you accept that?

    Excellent facility in Ratnapura

Ratnapura Provincial General Hospital serves as the primary government hospital in Ratnapura. It is well-equipped with excellent wards, laboratories, modern machines, skilled surgeons, specialists, nurses, and staff.

    Reliable 24-hour hospital service

This is the general hospital in Rathnapura, also known as the Teaching Hospital. They offer 24-hour service and provide care similar to other government hospitals.

    Lack of Privacy and Respect

During my visit to the hospital canteen to purchase a clinic book, the cashier bombarded me with personal questions about my reasons for needing it. When I indicated that this was private information, they reacted with yelling and disrespect. This left me feeling frustrated and disappointed due to their disregard for my privacy.

    Efficient Service at Hospital OPD

Today, my cousin was admitted to this hospital following a vehicle accident. Initially, we went to the OPD section and waited about 5-10 minutes due to a queue. Two nurses approached us, listened to the entire story, and guided us to obtain a barcode before the admission process. After that, my cousin was taken to the OPD doctor for a thorough examination. The ETU process has improved significantly. We were impressed by the prompt service from all the staff.

    Unprofessional Environment and Safety Concerns

This place felt more like a dog club than a hospital, with dogs everywhere—it honestly came across as a dog hospital. When I raised concerns about the health risks of having dogs in the ward, the doctor dismissed them, saying there was no risk at all. At that point, I realized there was no point in trying to have a serious conversation with someone who thinks that way. Cleanliness is a big issue here. I never witnessed anyone wash their hands before attending to a patient. Doctors and nurses ought to remember they are here to serve, not to demand respect. And really, what kind of rational person believes that constructing an ICU outside the main building is a wise choice? I've seen patients being wheeled on trolleys after surgery, passing through areas filled with dogs. This is not a game with human lives. You don’t need a lot of money to run a decent hospital; just some common sense and genuine care will do.
