Concern Regarding a Doctor’s Advice on Cataract Surgery
We visited this doctor to have my mother’s eyes examined. After the examination, the doctor told us that she needed cataract surgery in both eyes. Since the doctor also works at Gampola Hospital, we asked whether we could get the surgery done there through the government hospital. However, the doctor told us that around 3–4 cataract lenses break every day at the government hospital and suggested that we go to Asiri Hospital for private treatment instead. I found this very disappointing and concerning. As a doctor working in a government hospital, I believe patients should be given clear and fair guidance about the treatment options available through the public healthcare system. Hearing that lenses break so frequently at the government hospital naturally raises concerns about the quality and reliability of the services provided. Patients who seek treatment privately should not feel that they have no practical alternative but to pay for private healthcare. I hope the relevant authorities will look into this matter and ensure that patients receive reliable information and proper care.
