Serious Food Hygiene Concerns
⭐ Very Disappointing & Unacceptable Food Hygiene – SPAR Thalawathugoda I want to share a troubling experience my wife and I had at the food stall in SPAR Thalawathugoda on 2nd September 2026, between roughly 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. We visited to grab some dinner, but were let down by the service. There were two staff members on duty, and they didn't seem to prioritize customers in the order of arrival. We waited quite a while, and when we attempted to place our order, the staff seemed more engaged in their own conversation than in helping us. However, my main reason for writing this review is a significant food hygiene concern I witnessed. One of the female staff members had her wet shoe and sock placed near the cooking equipment for egg rotti and other rotti items, seemingly using the warmth from the equipment to dry them. I saw her touching the shoe and sock with her bare hands, adjusting them to get more heat. Afterward, she went back to handling and serving food. When she realized I was watching, she went to wash her hands lightly. From what I could tell, she didn’t use soap or hand sanitizer before returning to food preparation. This was very disturbing to see and, in my opinion, entirely unacceptable for a place serving ready-to-eat food. Food-handling staff should receive proper training and have appropriate protective gear and hygiene protocols in place. Personal footwear should never be near food preparation or cooking areas, especially for drying purposes using heat from the equipment. I strongly urge SPAR Thalawathugoda's management to thoroughly investigate this incident, which took place on 2nd September 2026 between about 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Although I can’t recall the precise time, management should be able to check the CCTV footage to confirm the events. I hope management takes the necessary actions to uphold food hygiene standards in the future. Customers deserve to expect at least basic cleanliness and safe food handling when purchasing prepared food.
