High OPD Costs Unjustified
The only similarity to other Medihelp hospitals is the name. Here, the outpatient department charges Rs 2000, which is the same price for booking a physician.

Dr. Sarath Paranavitane, the Managing Director of Central Medical Centre in Kohuwala, Nugegoda, has addressed concerns about the consultation fees at their practice. He explained that their facility operates as a Primary Care Specialist practice, which differs significantly from the standard OPD services found in government hospitals or some private clinics. They take pride in being the oldest primary care practice in Nugegoda, having served the community for over fifty years, and are committed to maintaining a legacy of trust, respect, and personalized care. The Department of Health has acknowledged the importance of primary care, establishing specialist qualifications for primary care physicians that are equivalent to those of consultant physicians. Most government hospitals now feature dedicated Primary Care Centres staffed by Specialist Family Physicians alongside their OPD services, and Central Medical Centre fits into this recognized framework of specialist-led primary care. The consultation fees are set based on the expertise, postgraduate qualifications, and considerable experience of their medical professionals, as well as the comprehensive care they offer. These fees are displayed clearly at the reception and comply with government regulations concerning specialist consultation charges. Patients are informed of the consultation fee beforehand, and they are not obligated to receive treatment at this facility—they can opt for free services at government hospitals or any other institution that suits their needs. Dr. Paranavitane also expressed gratitude towards Medihelp Hospitals, their valued service provider, for consistently supporting their patients and helping uphold the high standards of care they aim to deliver.

In my experience, the OPD fees here are the highest in Colombo. I typically visit Medihelp in Mount Lavinia, where the OPD fees are under Rs. 1000, but here they charge Rs. 2000. When I asked about the price difference, they explained that Medihelp is only responsible for the channelling, and that the OPD services are provided by another facility called Central Hospital or something similar. This division of services is very misleading and seems sketchy, as the staff should clearly communicate such details. Many choose Medihelp for its reasonable rates, but actions like this are damaging their reputation.

I have a few mixed feelings about Medihelp Hospital in Kohuwala. On the plus side, the staff are usually polite, and the hospital looks clean. The quality of service can vary depending on the time of day and how busy it is—some visits are smooth and efficient, while others have longer wait times than anticipated. A significant downside is the elevator. It’s incredibly small—almost uncomfortably so—which can be an issue for elderly patients, individuals with mobility challenges, or anyone carrying medical documents or equipment. It also tends to fill up quickly, adding to the discomfort. In general, while the medical care is satisfactory, the overall experience could be better with improved space management and upgrades to facilities like the elevator. Medihelp Hospital Kohuwala has its advantages, but there’s certainly room for enhancement.

I was very let down by the lab service at Medihelp. We requested a dengue antigen test for my 6-year-old, but after 6 hours, there were still no results, and the report hadn’t been updated. When I called the lab team to ask about the delay, I was informed that the lab had closed for the day, and the report would only be ready after 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. Is it reasonable to respond this way for a time-sensitive test like a dengue antigen test? My child is still running a fever, and without the test results, we can't make informed treatment decisions. It's alarming to delay a crucial test report until the next day just because the lab has closed, especially in the case of a young child facing a potentially serious illness. I expected a healthcare provider to prioritize urgent situations and communicate effectively. This whole experience has been very disappointing. I hope Medihelp reassesses its procedures to ensure critical lab results are treated with the urgency they deserve.

The service was absolutely terrible. I had to call four times just to get through to the office. Each time, they claimed they were putting me on hold but then cut me off. After finally reaching someone, I ended up being put on hold again and my call was transferred to three different people. When I asked the woman who answered why the others didn't know the doctors' schedules, she told me it wasn't her responsibility to talk to management and hung up. This is what I call a lack of service.

I was really disappointed during my first visit. The patient wasn't properly examined at all. Medication was prescribed before even checking her fever, which turned out to be 100 when checked later. There was no inquiry about symptoms, and the doctor didn’t spend any time with the patient. Yet, I was charged 2000 for the consultation and medications that had to be purchased elsewhere.
