    Mixed experience with great location

Our experience here had its ups and downs. The location is fantastic, just a stone's throw from the beach, and the air conditioning worked perfectly. It serves as a decent base for exploring Trincomalee. The rooms are quite basic, which you would expect, but the bathroom was lacking - it had an unfinished vibe, almost like showering in a concrete prison cell. On the positive side, everything was clean. The owner is quite the businessman. He was helpful and arranged a scooter for us, but we ended up paying much more for the room than we anticipated. We had originally booked a fan-only room through booking, but he upgraded us to an A/C room for a price that I felt didn’t match the amenities provided. Additionally, the exchange rate for USD to LKR and the card payment rate he applied were significantly higher than at other places we stayed. Overall, it seemed like he prioritized profit over providing service.

Great stay at Dots Bay Beach Cabana

My boyfriend and I spent three nights at Dots Bay Beach Cabana while visiting Trincomalee, and I would definitely recommend it. It's just a few minutes from the beach and close to all the restaurants. The family that runs the place is incredibly kind and very accommodating. They assisted us with our dolphin tour and even drove us to the bus station. They took care of our laundry and helped us extend our stay from two to three nights.

    Mixed Feelings About Our Stay

We had a rather disappointing experience here. Upon our arrival for a three-night stay, the owner immediately showed us a video of a tourist being attacked by a local with a stick, warning us that if we booked elsewhere, we could face the same fate. Although we initially booked a fan room, he mentioned that an AC room had just become available due to cancellations, and while we thought this was a generous upgrade, he charged us €10 per day for the AC. Later on, when other guests arrived, he told them the same unsettling story. He even asked us to cancel our booking.com reservation so he could give us the upgrade. Furthermore, he offered us a dolphin and whale watching and snorkeling package for €90 per person, but after checking with other companies, we found a deal with M&M Tours for only €34 per person. This was also the only place during our three-week vacation in this lovely country that required payment upfront. A notice on the door in all caps stated that there would be NO refunds after payment. Breakfast wasn't included; instead, he directed us to his family restaurant nearby for a la carte options. We felt somewhat threatened and uneasy after our initial interactions. On a positive note, the room was clean and conveniently located near the beach and various restaurants. We managed to enjoy our time while keeping our distance from the owner.

Avoid this place at all costs

I would give this place zero stars if possible. DO NOT STAY HERE. I urge you to inform Booking.com or any other booking platform that this establishment pressures guests to cancel their bookings while still requiring payment without going through the platform. I've reached out to Booking.com with evidence of how these people exploit tourists. The location is near the beach, but it’s situated in a very impoverished village where women may feel quite unsafe. We reserved a “deluxe double room,” but upon our arrival, we were shown a room that looked nothing like what we had seen on Booking.com. After complaining, we were moved to a second hotel, where they claimed it was a deluxe room. The owner even tried to charge us an extra 4 euros per night for switching rooms, which we refused, but ultimately paid more than what was stated on Booking.com. This is likely why they discourage tourists from paying through the platform. We had to leave after just one night. The room was dirty, poorly maintained, and we were given used towels. We even found cockroaches in the bathroom, and the walls were held together with duct tape and poorly insulated. There's absolutely nothing in the area apart from the beach. DO NOT GO THERE.

Great stay at a friendly hotel

This hotel is lovely, with friendly staff and a great owner. The bathrooms were very clean, and I would definitely return. I highly recommend it—200%! The staff was excellent, and it's conveniently located right next to the beach. I enjoyed my 10-day stay at this Cabana.

    Helpful owner and great accommodations

This hotel is quite nice, featuring a very accommodating owner who provides tuk-tuk pickups and gives tours around Trincomalee. He has a solid understanding of the area and is well-versed in tourism. Additionally, he runs a fantastic restaurant named La Bashi Cheq, which boasts a 5-star rating on Google Maps and offers delicious food in Uppuveli. The owner also rents out scooters and organizes snorkeling trips to Pigeon Island, enhancing the overall experience. The city tours of Trincomalee are top-notch, and the cabanas in Uppuveli are immaculate, complete with spotless bathrooms. His friendly demeanor and engaging conversation foster a warm atmosphere and demonstrate his effective business management. There are about five different hotels under his management, such as Beach Life Uppuveli, Surf Reef Beach, Bashi Eco Beach, Cabanas Uppuveli, and Beach Villa. The guesthouses feature helpful staff, dependable WiFi, and excellent service. I wholeheartedly recommend staying here!

I was quoted one price over the phone, but when I got there, it was raised. They mentioned the beach was close, but it turned out to be neither nice nor clean. There were fishermen and boats in the vicinity, and the area had a strong odor of rotten fish.

    Unreliable Owner and Disappointing Service

The rooms were just okay, but the owner proved to be quite unreliable. As soon as we stepped out of Trincomalee railway station, he approached us and showed us pictures to convince us that he owned several properties and provided bike rentals, which led us to choose his place to stay. However, the price for the room ended up being different from his initial quote. He later made excuses regarding AC and non-AC prices, even though he had already explained those rates clearly before. I found similar complaints online, indicating that this might be a recurring problem. On our second day, we left at 5 AM to visit Sampoor Lighthouse, but the bike broke down. When we notified him, he merely refunded the rental fee and told us to find another bike on our own. Initially, he said he had plenty of bikes, but later claimed that none were available. He didn't extend any help or provide contacts, which made it really tough to arrange transportation, completely ruining our plans. This was very disappointing and demonstrated irresponsible service. Additionally, he later mentioned that we were only allowed to ride around Trincomalee town and not to longer destinations like Sampoor Lighthouse, which is just about 42 km away in the same district. This was never communicated to us beforehand. His other properties include: — Beach Life Uppuveli — Dot Sea Beach Cabana Uppuveli — Dot B Cabins Uppuveli

    Cozy stay near the sea

The room was a bit cramped but manageable. Thankfully, it had air conditioning! The location is just a short walk from the sea, although it’s situated in a less affluent part of Trincomalee. We didn’t encounter any issues related to the poverty in the area. There was wifi available, but it was ...
