Great care, but facility needs improvement

The doctors and medical staff are highly qualified. However, the state of the hospital is quite disappointing (I was a bit shocked). I had to wait in line, but the doctors genuinely care and aren't just trying to extract more money from tourists! All my appointments were on time. At the end, they didn't charge me anything and simply mentioned a donation box where I could contribute whatever I could. I definitely recommend this place.

The Iranian ship IRIS Dena sank about 40km off the coast of Galle due to American submarines, resulting in 32 survivors being brought to this hospital. Unfortunately, over 120 people lost their lives in this tragic event.

    Terrible experience at the hospital

I experienced a heat stroke and hypertension. I needed an ambulance, and without knowing the hospital, my friends guided me there—they were true lifesavers. Reflecting on that day, it felt like a gulag, like death row. Nobody seemed to care, while my friends were desperately trying to get clarity about my situation. The staff ignored my requests (including for an IV drip, which I had to shout for, risking another episode of hypertension) and laughed and bickered while I struggled to control my breathing. After an hour, they moved me from my bed, even though I was disoriented and clearly not ready, dismissing our plea to stay. When I could barely move and had to pause to catch my breath, they rushed me to sit in a broken wheelchair. I was then pushed into a corridor in 30-degree heat; a nurse removed my IV drip and tried to get me out of the wheelchair. My friends argued for my case as I could barely stand and breathe simultaneously. It felt like they were putting a sunstroke victim back into the sun and taking away their only hydration. That next hour getting to a better hospital was nearly fatal. No shops had anything cold, and the hospital itself had no ice. Ruhunu Hospital is just 5 minutes from National. Go there instead.

    Exceptional Care and Support

I want to sincerely thank the compassionate lady doctor, nurses, and all the staff at Ward 8 for the outstanding care I received today (31.03.2026). I underwent a minor surgery to have two wisdom teeth removed, and as someone who typically feels anxious and fearful about medical procedures, I was quite apprehensive. However, the kindness, patience, and reassurance you all offered made a significant difference. You alleviated my fears and made the whole experience far more comfortable than I had anticipated. I am truly grateful for your compassion, professionalism, and commitment. I will always remember your kindness and the care you provided.

    Terrible experience at Karapitiya Hospital

Just the other day, I had to rush my mom to the hospital because she was in extreme pain. She was screaming, but upon our arrival at Karapitiya Hospital, the nurses seemed indifferent. They were just lounging under the fan, scrolling on their phones as if nothing was happening. It wasn't just my mom in distress—there were elderly individuals who were clearly unwell and urgently needed help, yet the staff showed no concern for anyone's well-being. Patients were left sitting on broken wooden chairs outside the ward. Can you believe that those who weren't even very sick were given beds, while we were told there were no spots available? My mom waited for four hours, and not a single doctor checked on her. They appeared too preoccupied with gossiping among themselves to attend to the patients. To make matters worse, there were dirty stray dogs wandering around the ward! I'm not against animals, but sick and dirty dogs have no place in a hospital where people seek treatment. Since they wouldn't provide my mom with a bed, she eventually insisted, "Take me home, I’d rather lie on my own bed." But when she informed the nurse of her decision to leave, the nurse started yelling at us. Really? Now you care? Then she pressured us into signing a document stating we were leaving "against medical advice." What medical advice? Not one doctor even spoke to us!

    Poor service from night staff

There are some staff members who lack basic human qualities, particularly a group on the night shift that seems indifferent to patients when they arrive. While there are a few good individuals among them, it’s clear that those serving should show more dedication to their responsibilities, which they currently seem to refuse to do.
