Great care, but dogs in hospital

I came here to welcome my baby into the world. The doctors and nurses are incredibly kind. I noticed one new mother who arrived without the necessary items for her delivery, but the nurses didn’t complain at all; they took care of everything themselves with great attention. It didn’t matter that she wasn’t Buddhist, which shows the staff’s commitment to treating everyone with kindness and respect. The atmosphere feels very much like a private hospital — everything is highly professional. The security team is also commendable. However, I do have one concern: on the ground floor near the security area, there are dogs, and the security officers seem to be looking after them. I even spotted dogs on the 1st and 2nd floors close to the newborn baby wards, which was quite disappointing 😞.

    History of Teaching Hospital Kandy

Teaching Hospital Kandy stands as the second largest hospital in Sri Lanka, boasting a bed capacity of 2,291 as of 2011. The origins trace back to the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815, which ushered in Western (English) rule. Dr. John Davy, an army surgeon and physician to Governor Robert Brownrigg from 1817 to 1819, arrived in Kandy with British troops and resided near the Diyawadana Nilame’s home on Malabar Street. A Military Hospital was established in a renovated building at the current location of the Kandyan Art Association, initially serving military personnel and civilians during outbreaks of Cholera and Smallpox. With the arrival of Indian laborers for coffee and later tea cultivation post-1821, the need for civil hospitals arose due to widespread malnutrition, Cholera, and Malaria. Following the separation of the civil medical department from the military, Colonial Surgeons were appointed to the Central Province, and vaccination officers were assigned to immunize the public against smallpox. By around 1861, an infectious disease hospital was developed in Deyyannewela, which later evolved into the General Hospital Kandy. One of the hospital's earliest structures, the Cholera ward, was inaugurated in 1866, situated where the current laundry stands, nestled between the kitchen and the old KSM building.

    Outstanding staff assistance for vaccination

I required a 4th rabies vaccine, which was priced at 1800 rupees. The staff were incredibly helpful; they directed me on where to go, communicated in English, and even escorted me to the necessary locations. Thank you to the amazing staff!

National Hospital Kandy is situated on Willam Gowallawa Mawatha in Kandy. While it's a large facility, many processes are sluggish, resulting in a significant waste of time. The hospital is consistently crowded and has a noisy, unclean atmosphere. Patients often find themselves waiting for doctors and other staff members.

Exceptional care at National Hospital Kandy

I had a truly outstanding experience at the National Hospital Kandy. After being bitten by a street dog while hiking the Pekoe Trail in a mountain village, I was understandably anxious about rabies and sought immediate medical attention. From the moment I walked in, the efficiency was remarkable: - Reception: A friendly young man at the intake desk quickly grasped my situation and guided me to a doctor. - Consultation: The doctor was very thorough. We talked about the incident in detail, and she recommended a rabies vaccine, a tetanus shot, and antibiotics to ward off infection. - Process & Cost: I was taken to the cashier, where I paid 3,600 LKR for two doses of the rabies vaccine and one tetanus shot, which felt like a very reasonable price. - Nursing Care: Two compassionate nurses in the vaccination unit attended to me. They noticed I hadn’t eaten in hours and insisted I grab some food before proceeding with the shots. When I returned, they were ready and administered the injections right away. - Follow-up: They monitored me for 10 minutes afterward to ensure I had no adverse reactions before letting me go to enjoy the rest of Kandy. The whole visit lasted under an hour. Everyone was professional, clearly explained everything, and operated with incredible efficiency. I genuinely wish we had this standard of service in European hospitals. A massive thank you to everyone who looked after me today. You're doing an amazing job! ❤️❤️❤️

    Disappointing Hospital Experience

Previously, I rated this place 3 stars, but I've now changed it to 1 star. I visited to support a foreign friend who was in the hospital, and unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst experiences I've had. While the facilities were lacking, what really stood out was the inappropriate behavior of the staff, from doctors to aides, who were laughing at patients. My friend was extremely disheartened. People in this vulnerable state need a compassionate environment to aid their recovery. He was discharged without receiving proper treatment or a diagnosis. However, since they attempted 'something,' I am giving it 1 star. I hope to never have to return to such a hospital again.

    Efficient visit for rabies booster

I visited today to receive my second rabies booster dose. The entire process took roughly 20 minutes. Although the hospital is quite big and can be a bit disorienting, asking for directions helps you navigate swiftly! The staff were very friendly!
