    Terrible Experience with Rude Staff

I had one of the worst experiences ever. The staff lacked manners and seemed more interested in gossiping than listening to their patients. It felt like a complete waste of time. The doctors were decent, but I would never recommend this place to anyone.

    Mixed experiences with staff kindness

Some nurses lack the ability to treat people with kindness, frequently raising their voices at patients instead of using a gentle tone. In contrast, the doctors are quite pleasant—they genuinely care for all patients, provide excellent care, and consistently communicate in a polite manner. Even the trainee doctors show kindness and respect.

    Disappointing experience with staff

I found the attitude of some nurses in Ward 37 to be incredibly disappointing. A nurse named Kanchana stood out for her unprofessional behavior, showing a significant ego and treating patients inappropriately. This kind of attitude is not what patients should have to endure from healthcare professionals. I won’t come back here again!

    Concerning experience with Dr. Fernando

I want to highlight a serious issue involving Dr. G. Nilukshi N. Fernando (Neuro Physician) slmc: 18915. My 83-year-old father, who is battling pancreatic cancer, visited Dr. Fernando on December 1, 2025, due to pain radiating from his shoulder, through his armpit, and down the right side of his body. To our shock, Dr. Fernando did not conduct any neurological evaluation, physical assessment, or diagnostic tests before prescribing strong medications. She gave him Ropark 0.5 mg (ropinirole) twice a day and Syndopa 275 mg (levodopa/carbidopa) every four hours, which are typically for Parkinson’s disease, despite there being no clinical justification or confirmed diagnosis. Just two days into these medications, my father suffered from severe confusion, cognitive changes, swelling in both legs, and an overall decline in health. We had to halt the medications right away. A physiotherapist later evaluated him and indicated that the pain was likely due to nerve compression from muscle tightening or cancer progression, confirming that the medications were both inappropriate and potentially harmful. My father sought the physiotherapist's advice because he didn't know whom to consult first, but the physiotherapist only assessed him and suggested seeing his oncologist for further discussion about his symptoms. It is deeply troubling and completely unacceptable to prescribe potent dopaminergic drugs without any examination or solid clinical foundation, especially for a vulnerable elderly cancer patient. Importantly, my father showed no signs of Parkinson’s; his only complaint was the pain. The severe side effects only appeared after he started the medications prescribed by the neuro physician, but thankfully they subsided after he discontinued them within a week. I urge an investigation into Dr. G. Nilukshi N. Fernando's conduct to prevent similar situations from affecting other families. I wanted to file a formal complaint with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), but while my father advised me to let it go, I felt compelled to proceed. Unfortunately, the SLMC requires both the complainant and the accused to appear in person for the inquiry. Since I live overseas and my father is an advanced cancer patient, attending an in-person inquiry is impossible for us, making it hard for families like ours to have their complaints thoroughly investigated.

Bed Bugs in OPD Waiting Area

Dear Sir, I would like to bring to your attention that patients have reported the presence of bed bugs on the wooden benches in the OPD and clinic areas. As a remedy, please arrange for a vacuum cleaning and insecticide spraying to eliminate these pests. Thank you. Lalith Silva

    High Prices, Low Quality

The canteen at Ragama Teaching Hospital (සුභ සාධක අවන්හල, close to the milk bar) has prices that are excessive for the quality of food served. I found the food quality quite disappointing, leading to an overall unsatisfactory experience. It's important for a hospital canteen to offer affordable and decent meals for patients, visitors, and staff.

Inefficient service at Teaching Hospital Ragama

On February 11, 2026, I went to Teaching Hospital Ragama to pick up my father’s CT scan report, bringing along a blank DVD as requested. Around 12:05 PM, a female attendant took the DVD and told me to wait. After waiting for about 30 minutes, I kindly inquired about how long it would take. She replied that she couldn't provide a time and suggested I return on the clinic date in two days. I did not receive any receipt or documentation after giving her the DVD. When I mentioned I would wait, she reiterated that she couldn’t give me an estimated time. Typically, copying a CT scan to a DVD only takes a few minutes. This type of delay and lack of communication demonstrates very poor service. We pay taxes with the expectation of better healthcare, yet our time and resources are being wasted unnecessarily. I'm sharing this to emphasize the need for improved organization, accountability, and respect for patients and their families.

    Frustrating communication issues

I tried reaching the hospital's main contact line multiple times, but they never picked up. It's strange that their line was busy at times, yet when I called right after, there was still no answer. I also attempted to call a contact number listed on a report from the Cardiology clinic, but the call dropped immediately without even ringing. With no other options left, I sent an email to the address provided in the report, only to receive a bounce-back saying "the particular email address doesn't exist."

    Mixed Experience at the Hospital

Hello everyone, I spent four days in this hospital, and my WD was 40. The doctors and nurses were generally very kind and nice. There was one nurse, whose name I can't recall, who worked the night shift on 24/4/2025. She was incredibly nice and helpful to everyone. However, there was another nurse, referred to as 'Bandara,' who was quite rude and arrogant. She didn't help anyone, and her attitude was very off-putting; she could learn a lot from her colleagues if she wants to remain in this profession. Overall, the rest of the staff were great and kind. Thank you to everyone who assisted me during my stay, and good luck to all.

    Appalling conditions for patients

This establishment feels like a breach of human rights. My grandfather spent some time here, and the circumstances warrant all the negative feedback. The visiting hours are limited, and the security staff can be quite harsh. No one should endure care in such terrible conditions. I actually witnessed at least two individuals sharing a single hospital bed. It's unacceptable for anyone to receive healthcare under these harsh circumstances.
