Sri Lanka's mental health service has a rich history. It officially began with asylums established under the Lunacy Ordinance of 1839. Due to overcrowding in three asylums, the Angoda asylum was built in 1926 with a capacity of 1,728 beds, primarily offering acute care for mentally ill patients. In October 2008, it was upgraded to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
