Sri Lanka's mental health service has a rich history. It officially began with asylums established under the Lunacy Ordinance of 1839. Due to overcrowding in three asylums, the Angoda asylum was built in 1926 with a capacity of 1,728 beds, primarily offering acute care for mentally ill patients. In October 2008, it was upgraded to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

    Grateful for Care Amid Challenges

I want to express my gratitude to NIMH hospital for the excellent care I received during a difficult time in my life. A special thanks goes to the female doctor who welcomed me on the evening of June 11th. I also want to extend my appreciation to Manori and the entire Ward 9 staff. I'm grateful to Dr. Wathsadani for her compassion, along with Dr. Shiromi, Dr. Manzerie, and Dr. Amarasinghe. A particular thank you to Lakma from Ward 16, who was the only kind person there. Unfortunately, the older nurses in this ward often shouted at the patients. We were not permitted to have mosquito nets like in other wards, supposedly due to suicide risk (there are cameras in each room). We were plagued by mosquitoes day and night, and there are hundreds in the ward. They might not be aware that there's currently a dengue alert in Sri Lanka. I believe some individuals need to reconsider their careers, especially when working with people in distress. Finally, I want to thank the main gate staff for providing a chair twice when I was discharged and when I came for a standard appointment while waiting for cabs. To everyone, including patients, who showed me that kindness, sensitivity, and compassion still exist in this world, thank you. For those who didn’t, I hope you never have to confront weakness and darkness. The hospital's environment is also pleasant, with gardens in each ward, which is very helpful.

Excellent care at the island's facility

This is the biggest mental health institution on the island, offering the best care possible with the facilities they have. The premises are well-kept, and the staff shows a strong commitment to their service. If you feel you need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out for their support.

The Angoda Mental Asylum opened its doors on January 31, 1926, accommodating 1,728 patients. In April 1942, during World War II, the asylum was accidentally bombed by the Japanese. As a result, seventy patients were injured and ten lost their lives. To make amends, they decided to construct a hospital in Mulleriyawa.

Excellent mental health facility in Sri Lanka

This is the primary hospital for treating mental health issues in Sri Lanka. They offer counseling and psychotherapy at their day center, as well as Alcohol relapse prevention therapy. For a full list of services, please refer to the attached photo. The outdoor area is well-kept and tidy, featuring clear signboards. There is ample parking available for visitors to the hospital. The canteen is clean, and the staff prioritize hygiene.

Top-notch mental health facility in Sri Lanka

The National Institute of Mental Health is Sri Lanka's sole hospital focusing on mental health. It serves as a specialized tertiary care center with inpatient facilities. There are distinct units for Geriatrics, Postnatal care, Pediatrics/Adolescents, Forensics, and more. Additionally, it features occupational therapy units, a newly established training center, and various psychiatry clinics. Many doctors and nurses receive their specialized training in mental health here.

    Appreciation for the Dedicated Team

Due to my sibling's admission to this outstanding institution, I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to the truly dedicated staff. I encourage anyone interested in supporting the maintenance of such state-run institutions to consider making donations, rather than squandering money on unnecessary expenses.
