    Disappointing experience with rabies treatment

Recently, my sister was bitten by a dog, and we sought treatment at this hospital for her rabies vaccinations. On our first visit, she received 4 doses. Three days later, we returned for her second injection, but again, she was given 4 doses. When we informed the doctor, she insisted that only 2 doses should have been administered that day, stating there was nothing to be done now. Shockingly, she even suggested not to jeopardize the nurses' jobs over the mistake. I can't help but wonder if she'd feel the same way if it were her child affected. The doctor then questioned the nurses about the situation, as if she lacked knowledge about rabies vaccines. The nurses, without admitting any fault, reassured us that taking 2 additional doses wouldn’t be a problem and that we shouldn't worry. But if anything were to happen to my sister's health, how could they make amends? They didn’t even offer an apology. Given their experience, it’s baffling how such critical errors occurred. I left the hospital feeling disappointed and skeptical about the competence of everyone there. Their professionalism and knowledge are definitely questionable.

    Efficient and friendly vaccination service

We received prompt and friendly assistance for a rabies vaccination. The reception staff were very helpful and available at 8am in the morning, though not during the night.

Exceptional Care in a Large Hospital

This is the largest hospital serving over seven districts in Sri Lanka. It offers numerous facilities to patients at no cost. Despite the ongoing economic crisis, they continue to deliver excellent care. It's also a training ground for hundreds of medical and nursing students. Additionally, it's one of the cleanest hospitals in the country.

    Excellent Care from Staff

The nurses and staff were incredibly kind and attentive; I appreciated how well everyone treated me. I visited due to a burn wound, which caused blistering on my right arm for an unknown reason. I was given antihistamine pills along with a steroid and antibiotic cream for treatment.

    Exceptional Care in Emergency Room

As a tourist, I found myself needing to visit the emergency room and ended up staying for two nights. The kindness of everyone I encountered made a big difference, and I felt genuinely cared for. I'm grateful for how they alleviated my fears and provided treatment. The staff here is truly dedicated and doing their utmost.

    Comprehensive yet Crowded Hospital

The main hospital in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka offers nearly all types of medical treatments available in the country. However, it tends to be very crowded during weekdays, especially during the day.

    Exceptional Care at Teaching Hospital

As a tourist from China, I was brought to the teaching hospital by ambulance because of intense abdominal pain. This government hospital has remarkable doctors and nurses. They gave me outstanding treatment and care, and their warm smiles eased my anxiety. Thank you all! If someone were to ask me what I gained from Sri Lanka, my answer would be your kindness and support. A heartfelt thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the Teaching Hospital.

    Historic and Essential Medical Center

Anuradhapura has a long-standing history as a leader in medical services in Sri Lanka, dating back to the days of ancient kings. Archaeological reports indicate that the ancient hospital in Mihintale, established by King Sena II, dates back to the 9th century. The Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital is the third largest hospital in Sri Lanka, located in the heart of the new city and covering an area of 18,069 hectares. It serves around 1.1 million people in the north central province and approximately 500,000 from the neighboring northern and western provinces. As of 2017, the hospital had a bed capacity of 2,029. Annually, it sees over 100,000 indoor admissions and around 10,000 live births. Additionally, the average daily patient attendance at the clinic and outpatient department exceeds 1,200. Construction for a new Accident service and emergency treatment unit began in March 2018, with an estimated investment of 528 million rupees. At that point, the hospital had 264 medical officers (though the required number is 400), along with 955 nursing officers, 15 radiographers, and 11 ECG technicians, indicating a significant shortfall in staffing. The commitment of the staff at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital was impressive, especially during humanitarian efforts in the Wanni, where they cared for thousands of injured soldiers. This institution also serves as the primary teaching hospital for students from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Rajarata.

The level of care was extremely poor; they mistakenly removed my mother's healthy fallopian tube instead of the problematic one. It seems that both the staff and some of the doctors forget that their salaries come from public tax money. The attitude of some of them was quite unpleasant.

    Mixed feelings about hospital care

I had a somewhat mixed experience at this hospital. The senior consultant, who was the main doctor, was outstanding and very professional. However, I found the general doctors to be lacking in their approach. Their demeanor towards patients was rather impolite, and they didn’t seem to examine or focus enough on patient care, which I found disappointing.
