Clean hospital with mixed service experience

I was admitted here for surgery and spent three days in paying ward number 3. The environment was very clean and well-kept. This hospital offers excellent medical services at a very affordable price, which is why it tends to be crowded. You can choose to have your surgery in either paying wards or normal wards. I opted for the paying ward, but the care I received from the nurses after my surgery was quite disappointing. After being released from the theatre, I had to wait around 45 minutes for the nurses from ward number 3 to come and take me to my room, despite the theatre staff having to call them three times. When I sought advice during my recovery, they simply told me they hadn’t been informed about my situation. The morning after my surgery, my consultant instructed the ward staff to discharge me, but I ended up waiting for a couple of hours before I had to inquire about my release. Only then did they begin making the necessary arrangements. I suspect that the normal wards might provide better care than what I experienced. However, the main drawbacks of normal wards are the potential for longer wait times for surgery and fewer amenities, such as shared bathrooms and a less crowded atmosphere. Despite this negative experience, everything else was satisfactory. The consultant, other doctors, and theatre staff were very helpful, and I commend them for their support. Additionally, this hospital complex has all the essential facilities for patients and their loved ones, including HNB and BOC banks with ATMs, as well as a restaurant complex.

Service quality is improving but issues remain

This hospital, a gift from the Japanese Government, holds national significance, but I've noticed a decline in service quality over the years. Although there have been past scandals with specialists being arrested, the administration is starting to make progress, showcasing the positive effects of honest national leadership on the staff. That said, there are still problems; I went in for a PSA test today, only to discover it was unavailable because of a chemical shortage. It's frustrating to see that private labs just outside the gate are managing to perform the tests without any issues. On the bright side, there's plenty of parking and the staff appears well-trained.

    Exceptional value and service

Considering the price we pay, this place is fantastic. The staff was youthful and full of energy. This is a perfect illustration of how charging a reasonable amount can lead to excellent service. I believe all hospitals should operate like this instead of being "dansal."

    Exceptional Care at SJGH

I recently had a very positive experience at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, where my mother had a hernia operation. We chose a paying ward, and the facilities were outstanding. The private rooms are well-equipped with air conditioning, hot water, comfortable beds, and a television. Importantly, they also ensure a very comfortable stay for the caregiver accompanying the patient, which made a challenging time much easier for our family. The care we received was exceptional. The staff is remarkably honest, friendly, and professional. To demonstrate their integrity: after my mother was discharged, my father accidentally left his mobile phone in the room. The staff kindly reached out to us right away to ensure it was returned safely. Moreover, the cleanliness of the wards and washrooms is praiseworthy. They serve nutritious, clean meals specifically tailored to the patient's needs. I wholeheartedly recommend SJGH for their excellent service and dedicated medical team. We are truly thankful for the care they provided us.

    Exceptional Care at Reasonable Prices

Our experience at this hospital was fantastic. It’s a semi-government facility with very affordable prices for the quality of service provided. The doctors and nurses were incredibly caring and friendly. I’m especially thankful for Dr. Jagath Mallawa. A special shoutout to Mr. Udyanga from the information center, who assisted us throughout our visit; he always answered our calls and provided instructions in a calming manner.

    Exceptional care and professionalism

The level of professionalism at [Hospital Name] is truly unparalleled, from the emergency intake to the recovery ward. The nursing staff truly embodies the spirit of this facility—always attentive, compassionate, and quick to respond. My doctors made sure to explain every procedure in simple terms, which made me feel like an active participant in my care instead of just another patient. The facility itself is modern and exceptionally clean, and the administrative process went off without a hitch. During a challenging time, they offered more than just medical care; they provided a sense of reassurance.

    Exceptional Support at Sri Jayawardenepura

I recently had a surgical procedure at Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital and my experience was remarkable, thanks in large part to the excellent assistance from Mr. Udayanga at the Public Relations and Information Desk. Navigating the surgical process can be daunting, but Mr. Udayanga truly went the extra mile to help me. He was very professional and meticulous in guiding me through each step. His support in coordinating with the doctors and handling the paperwork made everything proceed smoothly, alleviating any stress I might have felt. It's uncommon to encounter such dedicated and compassionate service at a front desk. I am extremely thankful for his help and wholeheartedly recommend this hospital for its skilled staff and well-organized care.

    Serious delays and poor treatment

I am submitting a formal complaint about the unacceptable treatment and delays encountered by one of my employees at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital on June 30, 2026. Around 3:30 PM, one of my staff members suffered a severe hand injury from a cutting machine at work, leading to significant bleeding. We rushed the patient to your hospital for urgent medical care. Upon our arrival, we were told to register at the Outpatient Department (OPD). After completing the registration and paying the fee, we waited in line, only to be informed that the patient should actually be treated at the Accident Service, forcing us to get a refund and restart the process. Once we reached the Accident Ward, we faced another long wait without receiving any meaningful medical attention. At about 6:00 PM, we were told the patient needed to be admitted, which we agreed to. The patient was placed in Ward 15, where they were given only a bed—no pillow—and there was no treatment or proper monitoring provided. During this time, communication was severely lacking. We repeatedly asked the medical staff for updates, but received no concrete information. At one point, a staff member simply took a photo of the injured hand. A doctor finally arrived around 7:00 PM and told us to keep waiting. We waited until about 8:30 PM, when we were told the necessary procedure would only be done the next day. Given the patient's condition and the lengthy wait despite a clear emergency, we opted to seek treatment at a private hospital instead. The hospital staff agreed to discharge us, but this process was also unnecessarily slow. Before leaving, we were instructed to pay the ward charges. However, when I went to the cashier, there was no one present, and I waited a long time without help. Since the patient needed urgent care, I had no choice but to leave and head directly to a private hospital, where treatment was completed in one hour. I returned the next day to settle the hospital charges, and I have evidence that no cashier was available at that time. I find this entire situation very troubling. A patient with an actively bleeding injury should not endure several hours without necessary treatment. Such delays put patients at unnecessary risk and erode public trust in the healthcare system. I respectfully ask that the hospital conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and provide a written explanation addressing the following points: 1. Why did an emergency patient face such lengthy delays before receiving treatment? 2. Why was there insufficient communication with the patient and their family? 3. Why was there no cashier available when payment was requested? 4. What corrective measures will be implemented to ensure future patients do not face similar delays and distress? My goal in submitting this complaint is not just to highlight our experience but to help prevent similar situations from impacting other patients in the future. Delays in emergency care can lead to serious, potentially life-threatening consequences. I look forward to your response and details regarding the actions that will be taken.
