    Disappointing consultation with Dr. Ajanthan

I took my son to see Dr. R. Ajanthan due to mild stomach pain, and I was really let down by the consultation. He was quite aggressive and didn’t seem to listen to our concerns. My son has experienced occasional stomach pain after recovering from dengue. Rather than trying to understand our situation, the doctor questioned why we had seen another doctor before him and interrupted me before I could fully explain my son’s condition. He suggested an X-ray and prescribed medication for constipation, even though my son had no bowel movement issues. When I attempted to clarify this, he rudely dismissed my concerns. We eventually saw another doctor who informed us that the X-ray was unnecessary. I’m sharing this experience to inform others before they book an appointment. I’m giving 1 star, as I couldn’t post with 0 stars.

Lack of transparency and hygiene issues

They seem to be opportunistic, charging without any explanation or transparency, almost as if they charge just by looking at you! My mother is currently in the hospital, and this is our third visit. The first time she was in the ICU, we noticed they overcharged us—Rs5,000 instead of the expected Rs1,500. This is their usual practice. We only come here because our cardiologist is associated with this facility. Recently, we sought clarification on some expenses, but they were unwilling to provide any. Today, I questioned their invoice and asked why daily consultant fees aren’t included, but still received no answer. They are certainly at risk of losing our business. Mr. Veerasudhan is the General Physician. I’m also left in the dark about the charges for the physiotherapist and how long the sessions should last. Plus, I have no idea how much they charge for an oxygen tank. They change the tanks frequently, and I can’t tell if I’m being billed for all of them, especially when some get changed in just an hour. Why is that? While the service is decent, there are significant hygiene concerns. I witnessed a nurse cough into her hand and then use that same hand to administer medication without washing up first. It's no surprise that patients get infections here, especially since they don’t wear masks. Yikes!

    Disturbing experience with nurse's behavior

I had a deeply upsetting experience today at Royal Hospital ETU around 7:45 PM with my 1-year-old, and I'm still shaken by it. This was our third visit for nebulization, and until today, every nurse we met was gentle, patient, and knew how to care for young children. But today's encounter was completely different and unacceptable. The nurse on duty, a Tamil lady who was short and dark, treated my baby in a harsh and frightening manner. She aggressively grabbed his head with one hand and pressed the nebulizer mask onto his face with the other, showing no gentleness at all. Instead of trying to calm him down, she blamed me for not holding him "properly" and insisted that I restrain him tighter. Anyone with basic understanding knows that toddlers will panic in such situations, but her approach only made it worse. It felt more aggressive than medical care. Even a bystander was visibly shocked by her actions. To make matters worse, she showed a total lack of empathy, offering no polite communication or reassurance—just cold, rough handling. It honestly felt like she was venting her work stress on us. Royal Hospital is recognized as a reputable and developing hospital in Colombo, but incidents like this seriously undermine that reputation. There needs to be strict oversight of staff behavior, especially in emergency units where patients and parents are already in vulnerable and distressed states. We are paying for care here, not receiving it for free. This is definitely NOT care. If this kind of behavior continues, it will be a significant setback for the hospital. Staff who cannot show basic compassion towards patients, particularly children, should not be assigned to such critical areas. I truly hope management takes this issue seriously and addresses it immediately.

    Disappointing Experience at OPD

I was charged around 7.01 for a fever issue during my OPD consultation. When I asked about the doctors' availability, they assured me that there were doctors on-site, and if one left, another would take over. However, after nearly 25 minutes, the doctor's cabin remained empty, with no one to update the waiting patients. This is unacceptable for a private hospital. They should either refrain from billing before the consultation or at least provide information on the wait time. I can’t comment on the booking service, but the OPD experience was terrible. Eventually, the doctor arrived, saw four patients, and then took a tea break that lasted over 10 minutes, leaving those who received their tokens at 7:01 still waiting in line.

    Lack of professionalism and compassion

I am truly disheartened and shocked by the complete absence of humanity, professionalism, and ethics at Royal Hospital in Colombo 06. Although online reviews have already pointed out serious problems like poor service, toxic staff attitudes, and a focus solely on profit, experiencing it firsthand was astonishing. I personally saw a senior administration member come down and aggressively belittle the security staff right in front of visitors and patients. The official was yelling at them over minor positioning issues, saying things like 'why are you sitting there, you should be standing here,' showing no respect or decency whatsoever. Such treatment of employees in a public space reveals a significant lack of emotional intelligence, leadership, and basic humanity. If management can treat their own frontline staff with such contempt and cruelty, it’s no wonder that the overall service quality, patient care, and staff morale at this hospital are severely lacking. A healthcare facility should be founded on compassion and respect, yet this place seems to function with a toxic, profit-driven mindset. I strongly urge management to invest in essential training on ethics and human resources. I am highly disappointed and would not recommend this place to anyone looking for professional or compassionate care.

    Excellent care and facilities

The doctors are skilled, and the staff is very friendly. I had a great first experience. I strongly recommend Professor Indrakumar, who saved my mom's life and provided exceptional treatment. A big thank you to all the staff! The hospital's AC rooms and food services are both commendable. I'm very satisfied!
