    Charming spot in Galle Fort

This charming spot right in the center of Galle Fort was a delight. We arrived for a late lunch or early dinner, where we savored the chicken curry, halloumi fries, and Thai green curry.

    Delicious food with attentive service

The service was incredibly attentive. The food was tasty and the portions were quite generous. Some dishes offered both starter and main size options, and even the starter was nearly a full meal. We enjoyed happy hour drinks, which were a nice touch. The only downside was the fish curry, which we requested to be medium spiced but turned out to be extremely hot for our western tastes.

Enjoyable Dining Experience at Church Street Social

During our stay at Fort Bazaar, we enjoyed breakfast twice and dinner once at Church Street Social. First off, we absolutely loved Fort Bazaar. Its location in the heart of Fort Galle is unbeatable, and stepping inside gives a cozy and intimate vibe. The rooms are situated toward the back, ensuring they are quiet and private, which is a rare find in a bustling area. They are spacious and comfortable, but the standout aspect of the hotel is definitely the staff. Every single person we interacted with was warm, attentive, and cheerful, which really enhances the experience. Breakfast at Church Street Social is generous and thoughtfully prepared, featuring tea or coffee, a fruit platter, a bread basket with homemade jams, and your choice of entrée. While it may not be the best breakfast I've ever had, it was solid and satisfying. I went for the full breakfast, which truly lives up to its name — it includes eggs, sausage, sautéed mushrooms, toast, and bacon, perfect for anyone waking up with a big appetite. Matty opted for the egg hopper breakfast, a traditional Sri Lankan offering. This dish consists of a bowl-shaped rice flour and coconut milk pancake, with crispy edges and a soft center, topped with an egg. It's typically served with sambols and curry, providing a delightful local experience to start the day. Dinner was enjoyable, though I expected a bit more from a hotel of this caliber. Matty had the veggie green curry and loved it, which is always a good sign. I chose the black pork curry, which many reviewers recommend. The flavor was rich and aromatic, infused with roasted spices, but the pork was somewhat mealy in texture. I was hoping for a more tender, fall-off-the-bone experience, and it didn't quite hit the mark for me. In retrospect, I wish I had gone for the beef rendang. Matty started with pumpkin soup, served in a coconut shell with young coconut meat to mix in as you eat, which added a nice local touch. I wanted a glass of Tempranillo, but they were out. The Pinot Noir by the glass didn’t suit my taste, so I switched to the Arrack Attack cocktail, which was well-balanced and refreshing. The courtyard ambiance in the evening is serene and understated, and the service throughout was attentive and friendly. Overall, we genuinely enjoyed our time at Fort Bazaar. Church Street Social is a reliable and pleasant option in Fort Galle, and combined with the warmth of the hotel staff, it made for a very enjoyable experience.

    Unwelcoming Service Ruins Experience

From the outside, the restaurant appears inviting, but my experience was marred by the staff's attitude. I requested a table for one for dinner and was shown to a high round bar table indoors, right by the cocktail-making area. When I inquired about sitting outside, I was informed that all the tables were full, despite a clear open table visible. The insincere friendliness was quite off-putting, leading me to ultimately leave without dining.

    Fantastic cocktails and great atmosphere

The cocktails are incredible—definitely give the spicy Tom Yam cocktail or the classic Arack Sour a go. We dined on the terrace, and the food was top-notch. The staff were friendly, and the vibe was excellent.
