Amazing hostel experience in Sri Lanka

This hostel was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our time in Sri Lanka! Like many others, we ended up extending our stay! It's truly a place that makes you want to return! With its friendly and inviting vibe, along with the fantastic parties and tasty family dinners, it’s hard to resist. If I ever go back to Sri Lanka, you can bet I’ll be at Wake Up Weligama!

Great community vibe at this hostel

This is one of the most sociable hostels I've ever visited. The owner puts in real effort to foster a sense of community, making it an ideal spot for solo female travelers—it's genuinely a safe environment. Activities like family dinners, morning and sunset surf sessions, movie nights, and parties bring the whole hostel together. It feels less like a hostel and more like hanging out with a large group of friends. The facilities are tidy, the location is convenient, and the owner ensures that everyone feels at ease throughout their stay.

    Disappointing Stay with Overbooking Issues

When we checked in, we were shown to our 'beds,' which were already occupied by others claiming they had extended their stay. We offered to return at 3 PM since it seemed the volunteers were confused about the situation. Upon our return, it became evident that they had overbooked. Instead of resolving the issue, they placed us in a hotel room down the street without any apology or explanation, leaving us in the dark about what was happening. The room lacked air conditioning and many of the advertised facilities, forcing us to walk back to the hostel for drinking water. The next morning, we decided to leave and messaged the owner to inform him of our departure, expressing our dissatisfaction with the accommodation since it didn't match what we had originally booked. To our surprise, he insisted we pay the full price and even threatened to involve the police. I made it clear that we wanted to avoid any conflict, but we felt we shouldn't have to pay given our experience and his threats. Eventually, we agreed on a lower payment, which we sent, but overall, it was a terrible experience. After reading other recent reviews, it appears we are not alone in facing this issue with the owner. I strive to leave fair reviews and only write negative ones when absolutely necessary, and this place certainly warranted it.

Best Hostel Experience in Sri Lanka

This is honestly the best hostel I've ever stayed at while traveling. It’s clean, cozy, and, most importantly, incredibly social. My friend and I have kept extending our stay; what started as four nights has now turned into eleven (and we’re still here!). Mahesh, the owner, is one of the most wonderful people I've met. He’s super helpful and always up for an activity, whether it’s surfing, going for breakfast, taking an ice bath, or just having a beer—he’s always game! The hostel strikes a fantastic balance between partying and engaging in wholesome activities, all while fostering a vibrant social vibe. The community around the hostel is truly remarkable, and I haven't heard a single negative thing about it during my stay. To anyone traveling in Sri Lanka—I highly recommend experiencing this incredible hostel. It genuinely feels like a home away from home.

    Cheerful staff and great atmosphere

This hostel is a solid 10/10! The staff members are always upbeat and eager to assist with anything you need. The atmosphere is wonderfully laid-back and welcoming, and I really enjoyed the family dinners—they were fantastic! I would absolutely return! Plus, it has a great location.

    Private Room Issues at Hostel

I reserved a private room at this hostel to enjoy a social vibe while having a space to work. Unfortunately, the private rooms are about a 4-minute walk from the main hostel, which made it feel disconnected from the lively atmosphere. Additionally, the room lacked working WiFi, as I was never given the password, making it hard to complete my tasks. Cleanliness was a significant concern. I know hostels aren’t hotels and I’ve stayed in many budget accommodations, but private rooms should still meet some basic cleanliness standards. The mirror was marked with water stains and toothpaste, the bed sheets had stains, there were cobwebs around the shower head, I stepped on a piece of glass, and the floors and mats were dirty. When I voiced these issues to the owner, Mahesh, he mentioned that he trusts his staff and referred to some customers as “crazy,” which was frustrating when I was simply raising valid concerns about cleanliness. He initially wanted full payment but agreed to half after we discussed it. On a positive note, the volunteers were friendly and welcoming, and the main hostel had a pleasant atmosphere. Edit: I mentioned all the issues to the volunteer who checked me in, and they told me I was set to go without payment. Later, the owner texted me, stating I had to return to pay, which I definitely would have if I had stayed the night. I told the volunteer I would pay half since I booked the room. I even came back for my swim trunks that I had hung up. I certainly wasn’t trying to skip out on a bill. I rarely leave reviews, and all my other reviews are 5 stars, which speaks volumes about my experience here. Frankly, this place isn't worth it, especially with so many other hostels nearby.

    Best Hostel Experience Ever

After traveling for four months, I can confidently say this might be the best hostel I've ever stayed in. I originally booked four nights based on a friend's recommendation, but I ended up extending my stay by another seven! The hostel has an amazing energy and social vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere. There are always people lounging on the couches, listening to music and just hanging out. It was so enjoyable that I returned for three more nights after leaving because I couldn’t find another hostel quite like it. Mahesh, the owner, is very welcoming and organizes a variety of events throughout the day. The place strikes a great balance between relaxation and partying while maintaining a lively social atmosphere. It truly felt like a home away from home, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! I've met some wonderful and caring people during my stay, and I’ll always cherish my time at Wake up!

    Great social atmosphere and hospitality

This place is absolutely delightful. Mahesh, the host, is incredibly kind and makes himself available to all guests at any time. He also participates in social events like surfing, parties, and ice bathing. The communal area serves as a daily gathering spot, making it easy to connect with others and plan activities together.
