I recently went to this hospital and found that while the essential facilities were present, the service and waiting times left much to be desired. Overall, my experience fell short of what I had hoped for.

I feel let down by the behavior of some staff members at Matale General Hospital. Numerous nurses, doctors, security, and other personnel seem arrogant and indifferent, even when patients arrive with urgent needs. Just because this is a government hospital offering free services doesn't mean that patients should be treated without dignity. These services are funded by the government, and the staff is compensated to assist the public. Patients are not beggars; they deserve fundamental kindness, care, and respect. It's particularly frustrating when staff make comments like 'you get this for free,' as if that excuses their poor treatment. Healthcare is a right, and compassion should be a basic expectation. I sincerely hope management takes this to heart and works on enhancing the attitude and responsiveness of the staff, as this kind of conduct reflects poorly on the entire system.

My time at Matale District General Hospital was incredibly stressful and unsatisfying, from the moment I arrived to when I was discharged. While not every staff member was problematic, most of my interactions were marred by shouting, scolding, and a lack of clear communication. During my pregnancy, I struggled physically and had a tough time getting the right guidance at the entrance for emergency care. I was treated harshly while trying to get a QR number. Once I was admitted, I faced long waits without a bed and significant stress in the ward. Even after the doctors finished and signed my discharge papers, I had to wait an additional 4 to 5 hours before I could leave. I genuinely hope the hospital management takes a closer look at the patient-care system, enhances staff communication, improves emergency guidance, and streamlines the discharge process. Patients, especially those who are pregnant and vulnerable, deserve to be treated with respect, patience, and compassion.

1. During Labour - Before Delivery* The House Officers on duty were incredibly inattentive to my wife’s pain. Despite her repeatedly expressing that she was in excruciating pain, her worries were dismissed and delayed. As her husband, it was heartbreaking to see her suffer and feel completely ignored and unsupported during such a painful and vulnerable time in her life. 2. In Baby Ward - After Delivery* The behavior of some midwives in the postnatal/baby ward was very upsetting. They handled my wife and our newborn baby roughly. To make matters worse, they made remarks targeting my wife’s religion, which left her and other new mothers feeling singled out and unsafe. This kind of treatment made my wife and several other mothers feel depressed, anxious, and hesitant to seek help when needed. A postnatal ward should be a sanctuary of healing and support, not a place of fear. This experience has taken a toll on my wife’s physical recovery and her mental well-being during such a crucial time for our family.
