Disappointing Experience at British Way Academy

My time at British Way English Academy (50-day residential course February 09 batch) was incredibly frustrating and stressful. Despite paying a hefty amount (around LKR 120,000), the experience fell far short of acceptable standards. 1. Misleading Advertisements Before enrolling, we were shown promotional videos depicting clean hostels and great facilities. Unfortunately, the reality was quite the opposite. The hostel we were assigned did not resemble what was advertised at all. It felt deceptive and dishonest. 2. Poor Hostel Conditions & Extreme Heat The hostel was poorly constructed, made from metal plates, resembling temporary structures rather than proper accommodations. Consequently, when the sun rose, the heat was unbearable, turning the place into an oven. It was uncomfortably hot inside at any time of day, and there weren't enough fans—about four students had to share one, making it hard to rest or sleep. 3. Toilets & Hygiene (Very Disturbing Conditions) The state of the toilets was among the worst parts of the experience. • There were over 200 girls but only about 14 showers and a limited number of toilets. • The facilities were unhygienic and not properly cleaned. • Most toilets were squat types, not standard commodes. • Showers would back up, causing water to rise to knee level, which was disgusting. • Even worse, students had to clean toilets, hostels, classrooms, and outside areas on Sundays. This is a private academy charging a large fee, yet students were forced to clean. It felt highly unfair and uncomfortable. 4. Food Quality The food served was subpar and didn't reflect the price we paid. It was disappointing and indicated another area where the academy fell short of basic expectations. 5. Staff & Wardens’ Behavior The wardens exhibited rude and immature behavior. Instead of maintaining professionalism, they often acted childishly. • They frequently argued among themselves. • Students were treated harshly and without respect. • We felt more like we were under strict control than in a learning environment. • At times, it felt like we were being treated like slaves. 6. Lack of Privacy & Uncomfortable Environment During classes, wardens constantly watched students for signs of relationships, creating an uncomfortable and stressful atmosphere instead of a supportive learning space. 7. Health Issues & Poor Medical Care Many students in my batch fell ill shortly after arriving due to dust and extreme heat. I also got sick with a bad cold and cough that worsened over time. The academy claimed to have a medical team, but in reality: • They showed little concern for students’ health. • When I went to the sick room, I was given only Vitamin C and Panadol, which did not help. • The nurse seemed to lack proper knowledge or experience. For actual treatment, we were taken to the same nearby medical center every time: • Prices there were exorbitant. • They failed to properly examine or inquire about symptoms. • They hastily provided medication and charged a lot. For instance: • I paid around LKR 2000 for a few medicines. • Another student with a fever spent over LKR 3000. Some students from previous batches suggested the academy might have connections with that medical center, explaining why they send students there despite the poor service and high costs. 8. Overall Experience Given the amount we paid, the academy disappointed in nearly every area—facilities, hygiene, food, staff conduct, and student care. The environment was stressful, unhealthy, and far from what was promised. I sincerely hope the academy addresses these significant issues. No student should endure such an experience after paying this much money.
