    Dedicated care at Kethumathi Hospital

Kethumathi Women’s Hospital was founded in 1980, thanks to a generous donation from a wealthy couple. This government-funded facility has 150 beds, 15 minor staff, 50 nurses, and 30 doctors. Located in Panadura, it serves not only local mothers but also those from nearby areas like Kalutara, Wadduwa, and Mollidoga, as the next closest women's hospitals are Mahamodara in Galle and Castle in Colombo. Each month, they admit around 400 expectant mothers and handle approximately 100 outpatient visits daily. Volunteers are expected to assist from 8 am to 11 am and again from 2 pm to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. The nature of volunteer work varies based on individual capabilities. Nursing volunteers can work alongside nurses, while pre-medical volunteers have the chance to observe doctors in different wards. Building a good relationship with the hospital staff is crucial for earning their trust. It's important to note that facilities in Sri Lankan hospitals can be quite basic, and treatments may not always meet the standards commonly expected in Western countries. Be prepared for some distressing cases and try to maintain emotional distance from the patients. Weekly working hours are usually set on a per-week basis, but most volunteers typically work Monday to Friday, enjoying weekends off.

    Horrifying experience at the hospital

I can't speak for everyone, but our experience was a nightmare. My wife spent three days here without receiving any treatment. When we inquired, they told us they needed time to diagnose the issue. The worst part was that she was bleeding for those three days, which ultimately led to a miscarriage. After we filed a complaint with the relevant authorities, they responded quickly with scanning and discussions, but it became unbearable to stay due to the aftermath of our complaint. I would only recommend this hospital if it's the last option available on earth.

Terrible experience in the labor room

I had a really bad experience at this hospital, especially with the staff in the labor room during my visit. I was left alone in there, and while I could hear them chatting from a distance, I was being bitten by mosquitoes and couldn’t even move my hand to swat them due to the intense pain I was in. When someone finally came to check on me, they just laughed and told me not to be a baby. The lady doctor who later stitched me up was no better; she clearly didn’t understand what kindness meant. I definitely do not recommend this place at all. Late update (2019.07.12)

    Exceptional care from dedicated staff

I want to express my gratitude to the dedicated team at ward two, especially Dr. Chandula, who is a wonderfully kind and efficient doctor. I also appreciate Dr. Prathapan and all the surgeons and anesthesiologists for their commitment and care. This hospital is truly the best place for donors, as many mothers come here for the services offered.

Poor Service Despite Kind Medical Staff

During my initial visit to the hospital, I encountered extremely unsatisfactory service. The hospital personnel shifted the blame to the patient for issues that were not their fault. That said, the doctors and nurses in the ward were very kind and friendly. Unfortunately, there was an individual in the hospital who was hard to approach and communicate with. Additionally, it was concerning to see some security guards trying to take on the role of doctors.

Great service in a calm setting

I’m giving four stars for the outstanding service, attention to detail, and cleanliness. This hospital is among the top maternity hospitals in Sri Lanka, and it’s a government facility that doesn’t charge anything. However, there is no parking available. The staff in the baby care unit are incredibly friendly. Unfortunately, the behavior of the staff in other wards was a bit disappointing, which is why I deducted a star. It’s located right in the city center, yet it offers an unexpectedly peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

Great care in Mother and Baby Unit

I received outstanding service solely from the Mother and Baby Care Unit. The staff there is incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere is very calming, making me feel almost at home. However, I regret to mention that the services in other wards are quite lacking. The staff is unfriendly and often raises their voices at pregnant mothers who require special attention. While the doctors are decent, the nurses and attendants do not have a friendly demeanor. Patients are made to wait in lines when they should be resting in their beds.

    Terrible Service at the Hospital

I experienced extremely poor service. My son was admitted to the OPD due to a fever, and the baby room staff in the ward were unhelpful. It took 7 hours for the staff to perform a blood test. Despite my son crying for two hours straight, nobody acknowledged us or offered any support, which showed a complete lack of care. Imagine the frustration of anyone waiting for medicine in this hospital.
