Excellent cancer care in Sri Lanka

This is the ideal place for cancer patients to receive treatment. The Sri Lankan government offers free hospital services for all citizens, and we are fortunate to live in Sri Lanka. The government invests millions in care for cancer patients, as the necessary medications can be extremely costly.

    Impressive Hospital Architecture

This was my first time at Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, previously known as Cancer Hospital. I was surprised by how beautiful the architecture was—I never expected to see such an attractive building for a hospital. I came here with friends for an almsgiving. If you're considering a place to host a treat, this is an excellent choice. Just a heads up: photos of patients are not allowed, so please refrain from taking any.

    Busy Hospital with Helpful Staff

This government hospital is clean but often packed with visitors. Patients from across the country come here for cancer treatments, as it’s the only facility in Sri Lanka equipped with state-of-the-art technology and methods. The staff are friendly and helpful, though some services might not meet top quality due to their heavy workload. It seems they need more personnel at the busy counters, as I noticed a few staff members sitting idle without enough tasks.

Their commitment and involvement are truly commendable. The facility is very clean, and the environment is conducive to fostering a calm mindset necessary for medical assistance. The dedication of the doctors and support staff is remarkable. This establishment serves as a prime example to government institutions of how organizations can be managed effectively and efficiently.

Exceptional Cancer Care at Apeksha Hospital

The National Cancer Institute, also known as Apeksha Hospital, stands out as the top facility under the Ministry of Health for diagnosing and treating cancer patients. True to its name, it offers hope to those battling cancer. The hospital provides specialized services in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, along with essential diagnostic procedures like PET-CT scans. They've recently begun offering Bone Marrow Transplants too. A skilled team of consultants, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical physicists, and lab technicians, oversees the hospital's operations. Almost all staff members are incredibly friendly to both patients and their families. The hospital is well-kept and organized, with the new RAZAVI building being particularly clean and neat. Services are accessible to everyone at no charge. Beyond delivering high-quality medical care, the NCI also serves as an important training ground for medical students and postgraduates. It boasts numerous amenities, including clinics, wards, and outpatient sections that operate 24/7. They prioritize the overall wellbeing of patients through various support services, alongside their medical treatment.

    Disappointed with Apeksha Hospital care

My father underwent colon cancer surgery at Colombo General Hospital, and to be honest, we were pleasantly surprised by how it felt nothing like a government facility. The service was exceptionally professional, with doctors and staff displaying kindness and support. We are truly thankful for the excellent care we received there. However, after some complications arose, my father was admitted to Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, specifically Ward 14. Unfortunately, our experience has been quite disheartening. The communication has been severely lacking. We haven't been adequately informed about his condition, test results, or treatment plans. He had an X-ray and scan done on Wednesday, and when we asked about it on Saturday, we were told that treatment might start on Monday, but without any clear explanation. My father is enduring severe stomach pain, vomiting, and ongoing loose motions, yet he is only receiving Panadol and one capsule. As family members, every time we try to inquire about his condition, we feel ignored and disrespected. It leaves us feeling helpless and unheard during this challenging period. We acknowledge the hard work of healthcare professionals, but we earnestly ask for improved communication, empathy, and proper attention for patients and their families. Cancer patients and their caregivers already face enormous emotional and physical challenges. A little compassion and clear communication can truly make a significant difference.

    Excellent care and facilities

The hospital's facilities are clean and well-kept, featuring modern equipment that instilled confidence in the quality of care. I found their appointment and patient management system to be very organized, which helped cut down on waiting times and made everything run more smoothly. What really impressed me was the level of care from the nurses and support staff. They were consistently available to help, answer questions, and provide guidance, turning what could have been a stressful situation into a much more manageable one.

    Compassionate Cancer Care at Apeksha

Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama serves as the National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka, offering crucial cancer diagnosis and treatment services like surgery, chemotherapy, and specialized care to patients nationwide. The dedication and professionalism of the doctors, nurses, and staff are remarkable. Many patients and their families arrive with hope, and the care and support they receive here is genuinely valued. ❤️ One important enhancement I would recommend is the introduction of a translator or interpreter service, particularly for Tamil-speaking patients and their families. Since individuals travel from various regions of Sri Lanka, some may not be fluent in Sinhala. It’s vital for patients to fully grasp their doctors’ instructions, medications, tests, and treatment plans during such a critical time. Having Tamil-speaking translators or a dedicated language assistance desk would significantly improve the comfort and confidence of patients and their families. Aside from this suggestion, I sincerely commend Apeksha Hospital for the essential services it offers to the people of Sri Lanka. Highly recommended for its committed and compassionate cancer care. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
