Mixed feelings about the hospital experience

Visiting this government hospital felt quite typical. It was exhausting and inefficient, with a sense of overcrowding. However, the doctors were genuinely kind and treated all the patients with care. This was the first time I witnessed such compassion in a government office.

    Crowded but Caring Staff

It’s quite busy here with many patients visiting every day. Despite the crowds, the staff— from doctors to nurses, attendants, and even the minor staff members— are all exceptionally polite and kind.

    Poor treatment by nursing staff

This place is the worst. The doctors seem competent, but the head nursing officer in this unit is really unprofessional. She doesn’t know how to communicate with patients, which is extremely disappointing. The staff tends to blame the patients, and it feels like they are more concerned about protecting their own positions than providing care. I witnessed a patient with a fracture being loudly scolded for sitting on a wooden staff chair. In another instance, I saw a nursing officer who had fractured her leg come in with her husband. She couldn’t walk alone, yet the in-charge nursing officer told her to leave the staff chair and demanded that her husband leave as well. Her tone was very harsh, and we all heard it. Additionally, some nurses at this facility treat others poorly, lacking any kind words or compassion. The management here is lacking, largely due to this nursing officer, and I believe it needs to be reviewed by someone in a senior position, like the director or matron.

    Disappointing Experience at Orthopaedic Clinic

At 73 years old, I visited a consultant orthopaedic surgeon to obtain a medical certificate as requested. Despite my severe scoliosis and age, I was made to stand in a long line of patients. The pain from my condition made it difficult to wait. I realized that even if I were 90, I'd still have to endure the same wait. When I finally reached the nurse and mentioned my purpose, she told me to wait outside until my name was called after she checked with the doctor. After a 45-minute wait, I entered and was given a number, only to be told to wait outside again. I arrived at the clinic at 6:30 AM, and by 9:30 AM, I still hadn’t been informed about the waiting process. Feeling faint, I approached the nurse to ask for my doctor’s record book, which she refused to return, despite it being mine. When I expressed my frustration, she finally sent me to Dr. Umapathi with the book. After a brief wait, I asked the doctor to tell the nurse to give me my book since I didn’t want to stay any longer. Instead of assisting me, Dr. Umapathi began lecturing me about not giving special privileges, which I never requested—only my record book. Eventually, after taking her time, the nurse wrote a note saying, "yes sir. Pl request his clinic book. take another date for clinic." I was surprised that nurses could make such notes on clinical records beyond just entering dates and queue numbers. If her English was lacking, she could have communicated in Sinhala instead of writing unclear messages. During this time, Dr. Umapathi loudly informed other patients that I had asked for special treatment, which was not the case. I urge Dr. Umapathi to retain all CCTV footage from the clinic on August 20th, 2026, between 9 AM and 10 AM to clarify what occurred. I have seen him multiple times since 2022, and he knows about my medical history, including my brain surgery in 2020, cardiovascular stents from 2018, bipolar disorder, and chronic gastrointestinal issues. This is the same 73-year-old man he mocked and shouted at, claiming he couldn’t grant special privileges when all I wanted was my record book. Instead of simply asking the nurse to return it, he chose to publicly ridicule me. Dr. Umapathi should keep the CCTV evidence to prove his actions, as he seems to always side with his nurses and assistants. The treatment I received from Dr. Umapathi, the nurses, and the clinic staff was inhumane, and they forget that we, the public, pay their salaries and benefits.
