Tranquil boutique hotel experience

We spent three nights at the Halycon Mawella and wished we could have extended our stay. This charming boutique hotel is genuinely a wonderful spot for relaxation. Although the hotel can be a bit tricky to locate, don’t let that deter you – it’s definitely worth the search. Here, you can find tranquility, truly unwind, and make the most of your vacation. The rooms are impeccably clean and well-cared for. What stands out is that they are cleaned twice daily, ensuring everything remains pristine. The beachfront setting is picturesque, and the pool is stunning and inviting. Another standout feature is the restaurant. The food was delightful, and the service was outstanding. At my last-minute request, they even made penne with scampi just for me – absolutely fantastic! The staff is remarkably friendly and attentive to your needs. Overall, it was a perfectly enjoyable stay. 10/10 – we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Sadly, every holiday must come to a close.

Charming stay at Mawella Beach hotel

This hotel is truly wonderful, situated right on the serene and pristine Mawella Beach. Each room has its own unique charm and is beautifully decorated. The staff is friendly, attentive, and eager to assist with anything you need—my morning coffee delivered to the balcony was a delightful touch. The restaurant and bar are outstanding; every meal and cocktail was impressive, and the wine selection is great. The pool area is lovely, with easy access to the beach, and the service throughout our visit was exceptional. We left feeling relaxed and happy, and we would definitely return! A big thank you to the entire team (and Loki!) for making our stay so memorable. The hotel is also very focused on community and sustainability, so be sure to visit their nearby Foundation to learn more.

A paradise stay at Halycon Mawella

Our experience at the Halycon Mawella hotel was fantastic. It truly feels like a paradise with its stunning beach and fantastic pool. The rooms were quite comfortable, and we particularly loved having access to Body Boards for free to catch some waves in the ocean. Another highlight was the hotel’s commitment to the environment, as there was no plastic used at all. Huge thanks to the staff for making our visit so enjoyable! Highly recommended!

Beautiful location, poor service

TAKE THE TIME TO READ EVERYTHING On the positive side, the hotel has a stunning pool and a lovely tropical garden, along with a magnificent beach in a fantastic location. However, there were several disappointments. I was taken aback by the staff's demeanor, especially the manager's. Let me clarify: this isn't a 5-star hotel but rather a decent 3-star establishment. There were no hairdryers, no way to dry clothes, no kettle, no refrigerator, no luggage rack, and no full-length mirror—plus, no tea or coffee provided. The prices at the restaurant and bar are outrageous; they seem to treat tourists like cash cows with costs that are double those at nearby places. Additionally, the ground-floor "standard" rooms are quite dark, damp, and lack any view. The staff here were noticeably colder and more distant than in any other place I’ve stayed in Sri Lanka, likely due to the owner's attitude toward them. During my visit, the hotel was only half full because of the situation in the Middle East. Each evening, there were at most two families dining in the restaurant, making for a very quiet atmosphere. I was enchanted by the hotel's location and inquired about the price for an additional night to adjust my plans. The owner, who is English, was nearby and reacted rudely to the staff member who sought his assistance, instructing her to check the computer without bothering him. His tone was insulting, and he treated her poorly. When I finally received a response regarding the extra night, the price was higher than what was advertised on the website and booking.com. I requested the reservations department to lower the rate by at least $5, as it would be more beneficial for them to retain a customer when the hotel was only half occupied. The owner interjected, stating he wouldn’t reduce the price and suggested I find another place if I was unhappy. He claimed he didn’t need my reservation and that other guests would fill my spot if I left. This kind of behavior is unacceptable for a place that presents itself as "luxury" and "5-star." There’s a clear lack of manners and basic courtesy here. I strongly advise against staying at this hotel, where the staff appears to work under poor conditions, the money doesn't support Sri Lankans, and the owner's behavior is simply unacceptable. Opt for places run by locals instead; you’ll receive a much warmer welcome and help support the local economy!

Fantastic family getaway in Sri Lanka

After researching numerous hotels and resorts along Sri Lanka's southern coast, we decided on Halcyon Mawella for our family's first stop. The decision proved to be a great one. The property is absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing, with incredibly helpful staff. The restaurant is wonderful, and there were only a handful of other guests on the beach enjoying the stunning blue waves, though we spent a lot of time in the warm pool as well. We stayed for three days without venturing out, and we would have loved to extend our visit. My family keeps raving about the amazing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at Illuk restaurant, which attracts many diners from nearby hotels that don't offer the same level of dining experience as Halcyon. While it may not be the cheapest option, every bit of the extra cost was justified. We eagerly look forward to our next visit.
