Distressing hospital experience in Sri Lanka
I had a truly upsetting experience at this hospital while on holiday in Sri Lanka. My son needed surgery for a broken finger and was admitted for treatment. After his surgery, my husband and I just wanted to stay with him until he woke up. However, a male attendant confronted us and aggressively yelled at my husband, accusing him of entering a women’s ward to look at women. He then chased him out in a humiliating and disrespectful way, treating him like a criminal. This was completely unnecessary, especially considering we were just worried parents wanting to support our child. This encounter was incredibly distressing. Additionally, the overall demeanor of some staff members, including doctors, felt quite dismissive and lacking in empathy. It seemed as though patients were expected to seek out help despite feeling unwell, rather than being provided care with compassion. Coming from Australia, where healthcare professionals are typically kind and respectful, this was a jarring contrast.
