- How are these diving school ranked?
- We use a Bayesian-weighted average score that combines the business's own star rating with the volume of reviews it has received. This prevents a single 5-star review from outranking 30 consistent 4-star reviews. Read more on our methodology page.
- Are the reviews verified?
- Reviews on Review Guru come from two sources: native submissions written directly on our platform, and imported reviews from Google Maps that we rewrite for clarity while preserving the original rating, sentiment, and named entities. Source is tagged on each review for transparency.
- Are Unawatuna's reef and wreck dives suitable for beginners, or only for certified divers?
- Both. Unawatuna's bay has shallow, sheltered reefs that dive centres use for try-dives (PADI Discover Scuba Diving) and for the open-water dives in the PADI Open Water course. On a try-dive, an instructor stays with you the whole time, and you do not need a certificate. Some wrecks and deeper reefs off the Galle coast are deeper than beginner limits, so centres usually take only certified divers there, often with Advanced Open Water or a minimum number of logged dives. Bring your certification card and logbook. The main season on this coast runs from about November to April, when the sea is calmer. Ask each centre which sites suit your level and how big the groups are.
- Unawatuna, Mirissa or Hikkaduwa — which is best for a south-coast dive trip?
- All three are on the south coast and share the same November–April diving season, so the choice is mostly about where you want to stay. Unawatuna is a short drive from Galle Fort and has a sheltered bay, which makes it easy for beginners and training dives. Mirissa is further east and suits travellers who also want to go whale watching from its harbour (see /best/diving-school-in-mirissa). Hikkaduwa is north-west of Galle and has a busy strip of dive shops along Galle Road. Many divers stay in one town and travel by tuk-tuk or car to dive sites near the others. Compare recent reviews of each centre for boat, equipment and instructor quality before you book.
