- How are these diving school ranked?
- We use a Bayesian-weighted average score that combines the business's own star rating with the volume of reviews it has received. This prevents a single 5-star review from outranking 30 consistent 4-star reviews. Read more on our methodology page.
- Are the reviews verified?
- Reviews on Review Guru come from two sources: native submissions written directly on our platform, and imported reviews from Google Maps that we rewrite for clarity while preserving the original rating, sentiment, and named entities. Source is tagged on each review for transparency.
- When is the diving season in Mirissa, and should a beginner do a try-dive or an open-water course?
- Mirissa is on the south coast, so the main diving season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calm and visibility is at its best. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rough seas, and many centres run fewer trips or close. If you have never dived, a one-day try-dive (PADI Discover Scuba Diving) lets you dive with an instructor without a certificate. It does not qualify you to dive on your own. The PADI Open Water course usually takes three to four days, with theory, pool or shallow-water practice and four open-water dives. It gives you a certificate you can use anywhere in the world. Ask each centre which courses they run and how big the groups are.
- Can I combine a dive with whale watching on the same Mirissa trip?
- Yes. Whale-watching boats leave Mirissa harbour early in the morning during the same November–April season, so most visitors book the two on different days. Doing whale watching on one morning and diving on another keeps you from rushing, and it gives you a fallback day if the sea is too rough. If you take seasickness tablets for the whale boat, ask your dive instructor before diving on the same day, because some tablets cause drowsiness. Some dive centres in Mirissa also run snorkelling and whale trips, so ask whether they offer both. For whale-watching operators, see /best/whale-watching-in-mirissa.
